What does it mean to be independent?

Independence means being self sufficient, setting your own schedule and making your own choices, being committed to your own values and creating your own priorities. It does not mean you have to go it alone. It also means being in a position to support others, not just with money but skills and knowledge, and being able to participate in building a healthy community. When Diane, Zinn and I created Women's Collaborative: Art of the Woman back in 2018 we did so with these goals in mind: To collaborate with a diverse group of both women photographers and models with the goal in mind of having the work we create ultimately culminate in an exhibit meant to celebrate the positives of being women, as just ourselves, our own beings, making decisions about our own bodies, what and how we shoot, and how we are positively portrayed. That sounds a lot like independence to me. We are not only making our own choices, but we are also fortunate to be in a position to connect with all of you, other female photographers and models, cheering on each others' creative pursuits, and growing this healthy, collaborative and respectful community, for the benefit of us all. We are continuously learning and growing together. It's true, we took a little hiatus from our events, just like the rest of the world during the pandemic, but a lot of us got to spread our wings and create in other ways, and we have all become a little richer for it, more independent. We are making plans for some exciting new events this fall, opportunities to create and learn from one another and grow stronger together. Mark your calendars for the following dates: Saturday, September 18th and Saturday, November 6th. We're putting the final touches on our planning for those dates. Watch for more details coming soon. In the meantime, stay the independent, creative, beautiful women you all are. We love our community. We hope you are having a safe, restful and rejuvenating summer! See you soon!
